2013

The Honolulu Chapter of AIGA and Hawaii’s Printers created the 5-O Show 12 years ago to recognize and celebrate design in Hawaii, and to give local businesses an opportunity to realize the quality and expertise that exists in our design and print industries. It has expanded in recent years to include web and interactive categories. No matter how many entries are received, only 50 winners are chosen.

All the other chapters say, ‘We want our competition to be like the 5-O.

— Sean Adams, Adams-Morioka (Hawaiis 5-O Judge 2011 and former AIGA National President)

ABSTRACT MAGAZINE

DESIGN FIRM - Inkubator

Abstract Magazine is a collaborative effort between emerging designers, writers, and photographers, meant to provide valuable, real-world publishing experience. The quarterly lifestyle magazine is published by The Inkubator, a non-profit, post-graduate educational accreditation program and co-operative workspace facility designed to support the new wave of Hawaii’s creative community

BREADSHOP

DESIGN FIRM - Wall-to-Wall

Breadshop is a craft bakery located in Honolulu owned and operated by Christopher Sy, an artisanal bread maker who bakes for local individuals and restaurants that value the quality of fresh, regional food. The concept is based on the idea of “terroir” which defines how the geography and climate affects locally produced wine, coffee, tea, or bread. The mark is a series of bread loaves broken in half to form a monogram, referencing fellowship through “breaking bread.”

MASTERPIECES...

DESIGN FIRM/CLIENT - Honolulu Museum of Art

After more than a year of planning and organizing with the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Honolulu Academy of Arts (now the Honolulu Museum of Art) presented the collaborative exhibition Masterpieces of Landscape Painting from the Forbidden City. The exhibition included 56 paintings from the Palace Museum, which has the largest collection of Chinese paintings in the world, and 19 paintings from the renowned collection of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Together, these works revealed a painting revolution that happened in China during the 13th and 14th centuries, and forever changed the course of the arts, with its influence still felt today.

OMIDYAR FELLOWS

DESIGN FIRM - Wall-to-Wall

The Omidyar Fellows program gives intensive leadership training to a select group of emerging executives, with the goal of creating a critical mass of leaders with the ability to tackle complex problems facing Hawai‘i. The flame as a symbol of leadership is familiar. In Hawai‘i, the tradition of lighting and bearing torches still plays out in modern-day ceremonies. Our logo is a faceted flame which represents the group while the diamond shape represents the lofty goal of a better Hawai‘i and a better world.

OCCASIONAL CARDS

DESIGN FIRM - Wall-to-Wall

For our 2012 holiday gift, we came up with an idea that we could have fun creating, and that our recipients could share with others. We concocted a list of unusual greetings for a random assortment of occasions – Occasional Cards.

To accompany the printed cards, we created the greeting generator to cover every sentiment for every occasion – usually in inappropriate and hilarious combinations. The interactive generator provides many minutes of entertainment.
